Walentyn Hryhorowytsch Kostenko ( Ukrainian Валентин Григорович Костенко , Russian Валентин Григорьевич Костенко Valentin Grigoryevich Kostenko * July 16 jul. / 28. July  1895 greg. In Urasowo , Voronezh Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 14. July 1960 in Kharkiv , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian composer , musicologist , music critic and educator.

Life

Walentyn Kostenko was born in the village of Urasovo ( Уразово ) in Sloboda-Ukraine , now an urban-type settlement in the Russian Oblast of Belgorod . Between 1905 and 1914 he was a singer in the St. Petersburg court orchestra. He graduated from the Petrograd Conservatory in 1921 and went to Ukraine in 1922. From 1923 he was professor of music and theater in Kharkov and music director of the Ukrainian radio. From 1926 he published articles in the press as a musicologist and in 1928 he published the book Ukrainian Folk Songs and Music .

From 1927 to 1932 he was a member of the Union of Revolutionary Composers of Ukraine.

He spent the Second World War in Kharkiv. After the war he was sentenced by a Soviet court in 1946 to 10 years in a camp (according to other sources it was 1950 and 25 years in prison). In 1956 he was rehabilitated and released. He died in Kharkiv at the age of 64.

His compositions were influenced by contemporary European music. Among other things, he composed the operas Karmaljuk , Die Karparten and, based on the play by Taras Shevchenko , Nazar Stodolia . He also wrote the ballet Оживлений степ Lively Steppe, the symphony The Year 1917 , a suite for symphony orchestra and six string quartets, choral pieces, pieces for violin and piano, and film music.

His works were performed on the stages of opera houses in Odessa , Kharkiv and Lviv by the best singers of the era.

His academic publications include studies on Pavlo Senytsia from 1922, the role of folk songs in Ukrainian music from 1928, and the influence of German expressionism on Ukrainian music (1929).
