W. Gary Ernst

Wallace Gary Ernst (born December 14, 1931 in St. Louis, Missouri ) is an American geologist specializing in petrology and geochemistry . He is the Benjamin M. Page Professor Emeritus in the Faculty of Geology and Environmental Sciences at Stanford University .

Ernst put 1953 his BA in Geology at Carleton College from, acquired in 1955 a degree as MS of Geology at the University of Minnesota and in 1959 the Ph.D. in geochemistry from Johns Hopkins University .

Between 1960 and 1989 he was a professor at the Faculty of Earth and Space Sciences and the Institute for Geophysics and Physics of Planets at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). There he held the chairmanship of the geological faculty, as well as that of the faculty for earth and space sciences and was director of the Institute for Geophysics and Physics of Planets. In 1989 he was appointed professor in the Faculty of Geology and Environmental Sciences at Stanford University, where he was Dean of the Chair of Earth Sciences. He retired in 2004 but remained active in the field of professional geology.

Ernst conducted research in the field of petrology, geochemistry and plate tectonic relationships in the area of ​​the circumpacific and alpine mountain belts and dealt with ultra-high pressure metamorphosis in Eurasia. In addition, he studied the geology of the California Coast Ranges , the central Klamath Mountains and the White-Inyo Range . Other areas of interest include geobotanical surveys and remote sensing in the Southwestern United States, and the relationship between mineralogy and human health.

In 1986 he was President of the Geological Society of America .

Ernst has been a member of the National Academy of Sciences since 1975 and a trustee of the Carnegie Institution of Washington since 1990. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society . In 2004 he received the Penrose Medal from the Geological Society of America and in 2006 the Roebling Medal from the Mineralogical Society of America .
