The chapel fasting Brunn is one of the Sorrowful Mother of God consecrated chapel at 802 m altitude at Dove Mountain in the town of Warngau in Miesbach . A pilgrimage to her takes place annually on September 15th to commemorate the pain of Mary . The complex consists of the chapel, a hermitage and the holy spring, which is now housed in a simple basin .

It is named after the spring, which was originally called Niederbrunn because it is located below other spring outlets on the Taubenberg. The current name developed from the name through dialectic blending and phonetic writing. Like the other springs, it feeds the Farnbach , a tributary of the Mangfall .

history

Chapel, hermitage and in front of the chapel the enclosed spring. View from the northeast

Since at least the 17th century, the spring has been considered to be beneficial for eye disorders. Around 1700 there was a wooden hermitage at the source, until in 1710 the provost of Weyarn Abbey wrote a received letter to Munich asking for permission to build a chapel and a permanent hermitage.

When this was granted, a high official at the Bavarian court, the secretary of the court council from Osterwarngau , Urban Höger, took over the costs of the construction. A simple, baroque chapel was created, which was dedicated to the five wounds of Christ . A small accommodation for the hermit was attached to the church. In addition, the spring was placed in a well house, so that the “spring sprang from the five wounds of the crucified.” At the same time, the tradition of pilgrimages to Nüchternbrunn began.

The chapel burned down around 1770, but was rebuilt shortly afterwards. The costs for this were borne by local farmers, in particular Georg Heiler from Schmiedham. A hermit did not move into the new hermitage until 1852. At an unknown time before 1850, the altarpiece of the Crucified was replaced by a Pietà and the chapel has since been consecrated to Our Lady of Sorrows . The crucifixion picture was placed in an annex. A large number of votive tablets showed the lively expression of popular piety and the participation of the population in the pilgrimages. In 1870 the 100th anniversary of the pilgrimages was celebrated at great expense and even in the 1920s a Holy Mass was read in the chapel on every public holiday .

The spring contained in a simple basin

In 1940 the chapel and hermitage burned down again. Only the altar and the pieta could be saved from the chapel, the fountain house remained intact. The National Socialist authorities did not issue a permit for the reconstruction, so that it could only be started in 1945/46 according to plans by Richard Steidle and with the help of the population. This time the hermitage was built separately from the chapel. The baroque fountain house with the figure of the crucified, from whose wounds the water leaked, was demolished in 1947 because it no longer corresponded to the taste of the time. Instead, the spring was piped and contained in a simple basin. A hermit lived in the outbuilding until 1961.

Interior of the chapel

Nüchternbrunn today

The chapel consists of a simple hall structure with a length of about seven meters and a width of just over three meters and a semicircular apse. There is also an extension with a small sacristy. Church pews offer space for about 16 people. It is covered with shingles, on the west gable sits a turret made of half bay window, half turret with an onion cap and a bell. The facades are plastered, the nave has three arched windows and two small round windows in the apse.

The hermitage is located south of the chapel and, like this, is plastered and shingled. Both buildings have concrete foundations. There is an open-air altar around the chapel and a larger shelter. Above the chapel a cross commemorates the last two Klausner von Nüchternbrunn: Frater B. Brettschneider (born May 25, 1882; † June 23, 1947) and Michael Schöttl († 1961). From Osterwarngau to the Nüchternbrunn chapel, there is a way of the cross with 15 stations, which are decorated with panel paintings in a naive style .

The chapel is only open for rosary prayers on Sunday afternoons in summer . Masses are held twice a year: at the end of June and on the day of the memory of the Sorrows of Mary , September 15, as part of the pilgrimage. There is also an annual May devotion. The chapel is also a popular destination for hikes on Taubenberg. The meditation trail , which forms part of the Jakobsweg network and is signposted from Bad Aibling via Irschenberg and Weyarn to Holzkirchen , runs along the Farnbachtal and via Nüchternbrunn .

The source is still believed to be effective for eye disorders. Pilgrims, and especially those taking part in the pilgrimage, wash their eyes with the water. The chapel and hermitage are under monument protection.
