Maria Schnee is a pilgrimage church in Wulfertshausen near Friedberg .

history

The church was built around 1470 on the initiative of the Friedberg Council. In 1499 the original Marien patronage was rededicated to Maria Schnee . The pilgrimage to the image of Mary was probably made through the mediation of the Jesuits. The late Gothic chapel was largely destroyed by the Swedes in 1632 in the course of the Thirty Years' War and the nave was rebuilt in 1641. In 1701 the interior was redesigned and in 1725 the nave was extended to the west.

Building description

The Maria Schnee church is a hall with a flat barrel and a retracted choir . The nave has a gable roof and has three window axes with round arches. The roof structure dates from the middle of the 17th century. The square, five-storey tower on the north side is provided with a pointed helmet and three-pass friezes above the sound arcades . The tower and choir are probably from the time it was built.

Furnishing

inner space

Parts of the stucco in the choir are from around 1641. The depiction of the Holy Spirit and the window profiles date from the early 18th century. The frescoes in the first yoke of the choir and the building inscriptions were created around 1770. The ceiling paintings from the 18th century are applied to canvas and were later attached directly to the plaster and partially painted over. In the central representation are the hll. Dominic and Francis of Assisi . The smaller pictures represent St. Dominikus, Barbara and Katharina. The fourth medallion shows a scene from the legend of the Evangelist Luke , according to which he was the painter of the first picture of the Madonna . The paintings on the walls of the nave from 1707 refer to the legend of Maria Schnee and are by Heinrich Matthäus Mayr. The main altar dates from the 19th century and shows a copy of the miraculous image of S. Maria Maggiore , also by Mayr. The side altars were reworked around 1800. The figures from the early 18th century represent the Assumption of Mary on the left and a Maria Immaculate on the right . Above the left altar there is a figure of St. Sebastian around 1650, above the right that of St. Martin around 1500. The angel heads on the gable cornices are from the late 17th century. The sculptures in the nave, the Lamentation of Christ by Mary (late 17th century) and a crucifix (around 1750) are considered to be of high quality. In addition, there are folk figures of St. Florian , Rochus and the Apostle James from the first half of the 18th century. In the front of the church there is a memorial stone made of red marble for the pastor Nikolaus Aierschmalz, who died in 1642, who was buried in the church .
