The pilgrimage church of Notre-Dame de Temniac is a small church in a suburb of the southern French city of Sarlat-la-Canéda in the Dordogne department ( Nouvelle-Aquitaine region ). The church has been classified as a monument historique since 1920 .

location

The Notre-Dame church is located on a hill about three kilometers (driving distance) north of the city center of Sarlat-la-Canéda.

Building history

Details of the building history of the small church building are not known. However, one can assume that the building was built in the 12th century - perhaps as a castle chapel. During the plague epidemic of 1688, the residents of Sarlat and the surrounding area made a pilgrimage to Temniac to see a statue of Our Lady, which was venerated as helpful . The pilgrimage was repeated every year on Easter Monday .

architecture

Exterior construction

With its mighty buttresses and high windows, the almost unadorned exterior of the church - apart from a few blind arcades - is reminiscent of a fortified church (cf. the former abbey churches of Saint-Nicolas de Trémolat and Saint-Martial in Paunat ). Only the large portal and the side blind arcades point in a different direction. The church has a simple stone bell gable followed by a small roofed bell chamber. All roof surfaces are covered with thin stone slabs ( lauzes ) - a material that was used more often in earlier times, but is rarely seen today because of the high cost of craftsmen.

Interior

Inside of the pilgrimage church of Notre-Dame de Temniac

The interior of the single-nave church also shows no architectural decoration; The masonry, made of light limestone, is so exceptionally well joined that structural decorative elements such as capitals can be dispensed with.

The two bays of the nave are vaulted with domes, as is more common in the Périgord . Pendants and dome form a seamless unit. The second nave yoke is slightly wider than the first or the choir , so that one can almost speak of a crossing . From there, two side stairs lead to the crypt under the choir .

The slightly elevated choir apse impresses with its polygonal 3/8 end with large windows that are covered by double arcade arches that rest on slender columns that are in front of the wall. The basket capitals are unadorned. The choir apse closes at the top with a well-built vault.

crypt

The crypt consists of two rooms - an anteroom with a mighty unprofiled rib vault and a small raised chancel with an east window. In the anteroom is a statue of Our Lady made of wood, which is venerated as helpful.

Surroundings

In the immediate vicinity of the church are the ruins of the Château de Temniac , a castle of which only a round tower has been preserved in good condition.
