Walter Bode (born November 17, 1883 in Holzminden ; † January 15, 1947 in Bad Harzburg ) was a lawyer and civil politician.

education

After graduating from school, Bode studied law in Braunschweig , France , Würzburg , Berlin and Göttingen . In 1905 and 1906 he worked as a trainee lawyer at the Bad Harzburg District Court .

Mayor's office

Bode, who was active as a government assessor at the time and was based in Blankenburg , was elected mayor of Bad Harzburg in 1913. He took up service on January 6, 1914. Soon afterwards, however, he was called up for military service and was only able to continue his office in early 1919.

Particular attention was paid to the spa business in Bode's activity, as he saw it as the town's source of life. He was therefore critical of the National Socialist efforts, which showed up on September 11, 1931 ( Harzburg Front ). The absence of Russian guests after the October Revolution and the absence of French guests due to animosity as a result of the First World War hit the city, which is dependent on spa guests, hard.

The influence of the NSDAP and its supporters in Bad Harzburg increased steadily, so that in 1933 the city parliament was ruled by National Socialist forces. Bode spoke out publicly against National Socialist demonstrations of power such as singing anti-Semitic songs, distributing inflammatory pamphlets and wearing National Socialist uniforms so as not to scare off Jewish guests. However, public opinion turned against him. After he had hired 15 SA and Stahlhelm members as auxiliary police on March 15, 1933 , Bode was given leave of absence at the end of March. His office was taken over by the local group leader of the NSDAP, Hermann Berndt.

After the end of the war , Walter Bode was reinstated as mayor and city director by the military government in 1945 . From 1946 he was chairman of the Wolfenbüttel district council and was a member of the preparatory committee for founding the CDU in Bad Harzburg. Bode died unexpectedly in early 1947.
