Walter Brehm

Walter Brehm (born September 28, 1948 in Tettnang ) is a German sports scientist .

Life

During his youth in Amtzell in the Allgäu , Brehm did athletics and alpine skiing, among other things . From 1969 to 1974 he completed a teaching degree in mathematics and sport in Tübingen , Berlin and Vienna . During his studies he came into contact with sports scientists such as Ommo Grupe , Herbert Haag and Hans Groll .

From 1974 to 1977 he worked on his doctoral thesis at the University of Hamburg , the title of his dissertation was “Acting and Learning in Physical Education”. From 1977 Brehm worked at the University of Bielefeld , worked on the establishment of an institute for sports science and from 1985 had a position as a research assistant under Professor Dietrich Kurz in the field of "sports instruction and education". In Bielfeld, Brehm also presented his habilitation on the subject of "Teaching athletic skills - a contribution to teaching methodology". From 1986 to 1991 he held a professorship in Bielefeld and headed the “Sport and Leisure” department.

In 1992 Brehm took up a professorship at the "Chair of Sports Science II" at the Institute for Sports Science at the University of Bayreuth and also acted as the institute's managing director. In 2008 and 2009 Brehm was Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Studies at the University of Bayreuth. He has chaired the working group for sports science and sport at the universities in Bavaria several times. In October 2013 he retired in Bayreuth.

From 2009 to 2017, Brehm was an honorary professor at the Institutes for Sports Science at Baptist University in Hong Kong and at the Wuhan Sports University.

From the mid-1990s, Brehm advised the German Gymnastics Federation (DTB) in addition to his university activities, from November 2009 to November 2017 he was Vice President for "General Gymnastics" at the DTB. As part of this office, he was responsible for the subject area of ​​health and fitness sports.

Brehm's main research areas were “Sport and Health”, and he also dealt with school sport and the role of sports clubs. Important publications were, among others, the “Health Sport Handbook”, which he published together with Klaus Bös, “Healthy and Fit: Health Programs for Adults” and “Skiing for Children and Young People. Training, technique, tactics ”.

As part of the German Association for Sports Science (DVS), together with Dietrich Kurz, he pushed ahead with the establishment of a sports education section, which was finally brought to life in 1987 at a conference he organized in Bielefeld. In 1997 he was also involved in the founding of the DVS committee for "Sport and Health" and chaired this commission from 1998 to 2002.
