Walter Fürst (theologian)

Walter Fürst (born December 13, 1940 in Stuttgart ) is a German Catholic pastor , priest and pastoral theologian .

biography

From 1961 to 1965, Fürst studied Catholic theology at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen and at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1966 he entered the seminary of the Rottenburg-Stuttgart diocese . 1967/68 he was a deacon at the cathedral parish of St. Martin in Rottenburg am Neckar . In 1968 he was ordained a priest of the Rottenburg-Stuttgart diocese and was vicar to St. Laurentius in Bietigheim and St. Peter and Paul in Heilbronn . From 1968 to 1970 he worked as a vicar at the Heilig-Geist-Kirche in Schorndorf .

In the years 1970-77 he held the post of repetitionist at the Episcopal Hochschulkonvikt Wilhelmsstift in Tübingen . Fürst received his doctorate in 1977 at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Tübingen with a thesis on the theology and science understanding of the moral and pastoral theologian Johann Baptist von Hirscher . From 1977 to 1980 he was pastor in Tübingen-Bühl. From 1977 to 1984 he worked in the advanced training of pastors and lay theologians in the Rottenburg-Stuttgart diocese. From 1980 to 1984 he completed his habilitation studies with pastoral assistance in the parish of St. Joseph and St. Martin in Herrenberg . From 1983 to 1985 he was a member of the diocesan synod of the Rottenburg-Stuttgart diocese.

In 1985, Fürst completed his habilitation in pastoral theology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with the thesis “Practical theological judgment. On the way to a symbolic-critical method of practical theology ”. In the same year he was appointed professor for life at the Catholic-Theological Faculty of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn for pastoral theology, three years later he was appointed professor for pastoral theology at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Bonn. In 1989 he became director of the newly established seminary for pastoral theology.

From 1985 to 1993, Fürst was a representative of the German section on the advisory board of German-speaking pastoral theologians. Since 1985, Fürst has been a member of the “Basic Pastoral Issues” commission of the Central Committee of German Catholics . From 1994 to 1996, Fürst held the office of dean of the Catholic-Theological Faculty of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn. From 1997 to 2001, Fürst was deputy chairman of the Conference of German-speaking Pastoral Theologians. In 2006 he retired. He lives in Bondorf .
