Walter Georg Olms

Walter Georg Olms (born May 4, 1927 in Hildesheim ) (mostly abbreviated to W. Georg Olms ) is a German publisher and horse breeder . The Georg Olms Verlag was and 1970s and internationally in the 1960s mainly through reprints known and new editions of scientific works.

Life

Olms attended high school until he was drafted into military service in 1944. He was wounded and was briefly imprisoned in 1945. He completed his training as a bookseller in 1946 and in 1953 took over the "Georg Olms bookstore" in Hildesheim from his father. He initially expanded the bookstore to include a scientific second-hand bookshop and later a scientific publishing division. In 1958, Olms began to publish reprints of historically important scientific works in his publishing house. In 1960 the publishing house began publishing activities with first scientific publications. In 1980 he converted the company into Georg Olms AG, and in 1983 he bought the Weidmannsche Buchhandlung .

The Olms-Verlag and its subsidiaries

In 2012, Olms Verlag delivered around 250 new publications per year. The program covers around 30 different subject areas, mainly from the humanities. The managing director of the parent company Olms AG is W. Georg Olms, the program manager is Dietrich Olms. Public titles and especially hippological works are published in the Olms Press . The Edition Olms in Zurich is led by the elder son Manfred Olms and laid particular non-fiction and illustrated books.

Work as a horse breeder

In 1969, Olms founded the Hamasa stud in Treis near Gießen, where so-called Asile Arab horses are bred. "Asile" Arabian horses are horses whose pedigree can be traced back to the Bedouin horses from the Arabian Peninsula. Olms is president of the international "Asil Club", which has breeders from forty countries as members. He has authored several books on Asile Arabian horses. Through breeding and his books on Arab horses, Olms has excellent contacts in the Gulf States and Saudi Arabia.
