The German-Arab Society e. V. ( DAG ) is a non-profit association. It was founded in Würzburg in 1966 ; the association's headquarters and offices are in Berlin .

Basics

The aim of the German-Arab Society is the continuous expansion of German-Arab friendship and the deepening of economic, political and cultural relations between Germany and the Arab world.

Central points of the statutes of the German-Arab Society are:

  • to promote German-Arab friendship;
  • to inform the citizens of the Arab countries and the Federal Republic of Germany sufficiently and objectively about the problems, questions and events of interest to both sides;
  • Promote and deepen relationships in the fields of culture, research and science;
  • to promote and intensify political and economic relations, especially development aid projects between the Arab countries and the Federal Republic of Germany;
  • looking after the Arabs living in the Federal Republic;
  • Support for people in need, especially in the Arab states.

In addition to the chairman, the DAG advisory board includes the ambassadors of the Arab countries in Germany and other individuals. Well-known members of the DAG Advisory Board include:

History of the Board of Directors

The former Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister of Economics Jürgen Möllemann was President of the DAG from 1981 to 1991 and from 1993 to his suicide in 2003 . In between, the former vice-president of the DAG and SPD politician Dieter Schinzel was president of the company from 1991 to 1993. In 2004, the former Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs, Otto Wiesheu, was elected Möllemann's successor. In March 2007 Wiesheu resigned from the office after a large majority of the members did not approve an amendment to the statutes he was aiming for. Peter Scholl-Latour was unanimously elected to succeed him as President of the DAG ; he was appointed to the DAG Advisory Board in 1986. In December 2008 and in the following years up to and including 2014, Scholl-Latour was unanimously confirmed as President by the general meeting and by ordinary election. Since the death of Peter Scholl-Latour on August 16, 2014, the Vice-Presidents have taken his place. The Vice Presidents, Ernst J. Trapp and Ulrich Kienzle, were interim spokespersons for the Presidium until the new President was elected.

In 2013 a. a. the entrepreneur Ernst J. Trapp and the TV journalist Ulrich Kienzle. The office of the Secretary General has Ministerialrat a. D. Harald Moritz Bock. The DAG's treasurer was the lawyer and tax advisor Oliver Klein. The board also included the long-time head of the Palestinian Representation in the Nordic countries, Abdul-Rahman Alawi, ambassador ret. D. Gerhard Fulda, the entrepreneurs Bassam Helou and Ali Memari Fard, Alexander Krah , Sinan Carikci and Ibrahim El-Zayat. Honorary President of the DAG has been Prince Faisal ibn Abdul Majeed Al Saud of Saudi Arabia since October 2007.

In April 2010, MEP Alexandra Thein became chair of the advisory board.
