Michael-Hubertus von Sprenger (born November 7, 1940 in Breslau , Silesia ) is a German lawyer and attorney . His office is based in Munich . He gained greater fame when he was commissioned by the Turkish President Erdoğan in April 2016 to represent him in the Böhmermann affair in German courts. Before that, he had already made a name for himself by representing well-known right-wing extremists , Holocaust deniers such as Gerhard Frey , David Irving and Jürgen Elsässer and as a lawyer for Millî Görüş .

Study and training

Michael-Hubertus von Sprenger studied business administration and law at the Free University of Berlin and became a member of the Corps Palatia Bonn in 1962 . He passed his first state examination in law at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn ; He completed his legal clerkship and his second state examination in law in Munich .

Practice as a lawyer

After passing the second state examination, he first worked in the credit department of a major bank. He has been working as a lawyer since 1973. In 1975 he founded the law firm von Sprenger und Kollegen together with Hans-Viktor von Lavergne . Today the law firm bears the name of Rechtsanwälte von Sprenger and von Lavergne .

His main areas of activity include family law , commercial tenancy law, and press and media law . He served as a lawyer for the right-wing extremist party Deutsche Volksunion (which merged with the NPD in 2011 ), as legal representative of the Holocaust denier David Irving, as lawyer for Jürgen Elsässer in the Elsässer-Ditfurth trial and as an attorney for Millî Görüş in injunctive relief Active against the Islamic religious community of Berlin , the Free State of Bavaria and the State of North Rhine-Westphalia . After Götz George suffered a boat accident in 1996, he commissioned Sprenger to obtain damages and compensation for pain and suffering.

Böhmermann affair

Sprenger temporarily represented Erdoğan in the Böhmermann affair . An attempted coup by Turkish military units failed three months after assuming the mandate . Erdoğan then had thousands of Turks arrested (including many soldiers, prosecutors, judges and other civil servants); Before the constitutional referendum in Turkey on April 16, 2017 , he subjected the German government and other (including the Dutch government ) to Nazi methods. Three weeks after the referendum, Sprenger resigned from his seat.
