Walter Heinz (journalist)

Walter Heinz (born August 14, 1943 in Jägerndorf ; † August 7, 2016 ) was a German television journalist .

Walter Heinz studied from 1961 to 1967 at the Institute for International Relations in Moscow , where he received a diploma in political science and passed the state examination in Arabic. He then worked as a consultant for Arab countries in the GDR foreign ministry and finally with the German TV broadcaster (DFF) , the state television broadcaster of the GDR ; there he ran a foreign magazine and reported with many foreign reports.

In 1992 he switched to the Second German Television (ZDF) in Mainz , where he worked as an editor for the ZDF morning magazine. In 1995 he became the foreign correspondent in Moscow and in 1998 the Africa correspondent at the ZDF studio in Nairobi , where he was in charge from 1999 until his retirement in 2009.

He was best known for his reporting from the war zone in Chechnya . He has produced numerous reports and documentaries about Africa , including Ins wilde Herz Afrikas (2001), Dirty Shops (2002), Treck der Tuareg (2004) and Mission in Africa (2006). Most recently he shot the issue of the Nigerian metropolis Lagos - The Daily Miracle (2007) for the ZDF series Megacitys .
