Walter J. Donnelly

Walter Joseph Donnelly (born January 9, 1896 in New Haven , Connecticut , † November 14, 1970 ) was an American diplomat .

Life

Donnelly studied political science and law and then worked from 1921 in the US Department of Justice . As a soldier, he served also in the First World War . From the US Department of Justice, he switched to the diplomatic service where he worked as a trade attaché in Colombia in 1928 . In the same position he served at the US Embassy in Cuba (1934) and Brazil (1937).

After the war, he served as the United States Ambassador to Costa Rica (1947) and Venezuela . From 1950 to 1951 Donnelly was US High Commissioner in occupied Austria and then US Ambassador until 1952. From August 1, 1952 to December 11, 1952, Donnelly served as the US High Commissioner in Germany .

His parents were Henry Joseph Donnelly and Elizabeth Anne Donnelly (nee Kivian). Walter J. married his wife Maria Helena Samper de Horrora on January 28, 1936.
