Walter Langer (politician, 1892)

Walter Langer (born October 2, 1892 in Crimmitschau , † July 22, 1977 in Coburg ) was a German local politician of the FDP . From July 1, 1948 to April 30, 1970, he was Lord Mayor of Coburg.

Career

He passed his Abitur at the Thomas School in Leipzig . After taking part in the First World War as a volunteer, he received his doctorate in law in 1922. During his studies he became active with the Landsmannschaft Neoborussia Halle. He practiced as a lawyer until the outbreak of the Second World War. He was then drafted into the Reich Air Force.

After the war he fled to Coburg and worked as a lawyer again. He made a name for himself as a defender in the ongoing denazification proceedings.

In May 1948, Langer ran for the FDP as a candidate for mayor and won against the previous incumbent Ludwig Meyer of the SPD. He took up his new office on July 1, 1948.

politics

The most important challenges at the beginning of his term of office were the housing shortage and the refugee problem. The municipal housing association was founded for this purpose. On the Hörnleinsgrund, a new urban district emerged from the 1960s with the demonstrative building project called "Demo".

A controversial project during his tenure was the construction of the Rosengarten Congress Center , which was inaugurated in 1962.

Honors

When he left office in 1970, the city of Coburg granted him honorary citizenship. The connecting road between the districts of Ketschendorf and Seidmannsdorf was named after Dr. Walter Langer named.
