Norbert Tessmer

Norbert Tessmer (born August 4, 1953 in Coburg ) is a German local politician ( SPD ). From 2014 to 2020 he was Lord Mayor of his hometown Coburg.

Life

After finishing school and training as a florist, Tessmer became an officer in the Federal Border Guard in 1973 . He then went through a career within the police force, which ended in 1999 when he was appointed First Police Chief Superintendent in the role of a Hundred Leader.

At the same time, Tessmer, a member of the SPD since 1973, was active in local politics. In 1984 he was first elected to the city council, where he held various functions. He was elected chairman of his parliamentary group in 1994, from 1996 to 2008 and 2008 to 2014 he was third and second mayor. A focus on the city's cultural and social policy, for which he had been a full-time consultant since 2002, resulted in an exemption from the police force.

Tessmer ran as a direct candidate for the SPD in the Bundestag constituency of Coburg in the 2013 federal election after Carl-Christian Dressel withdrew his candidacy. Tessmer missed entering the Bundestag. He was able to attract 32.4 percent of the first votes .

After the incumbent mayor and party colleague Norbert Kastner announced his withdrawal from politics, the Coburg SPD selected Tessmer as a candidate for the mayor's office in the municipal elections in Bavaria in 2014 . Tessmer was able to achieve a result of 51.30 percent of the vote. Birgit Weber from the CSU came second with 25.63 percent. On August 8, 2019, Tessmer announced that he would not run again in the 2020 local elections in Bavaria .

On March 7, 2020, Tessmer was elected deputy state chairman of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund Bayern.
