Dominik Sauerteig (born June 29, 1986 in Coburg ) is a German local politician ( SPD ). He has been Lord Mayor of the independent city of Coburg since May 2020 .

Life

Dominik Sauerteig comes from a working-class family and grew up in the north of Coburg. After graduating from the Ernestinum in Coburg, he began studying at the Faculty of Law and Economics at the University of Bayreuth , which he completed in 2010 with an additional degree in business law. During his legal clerkship, he completed a part-time specialist lawyer course in the field of labor law . In December 2012, Sauerteig was admitted to the bar . In addition to his full-time activity as a lawyer in trade union labor, social and civil service legal protection, he runs his own law firm.

Since 2014 Dominik Sauerteig has been chairman of the non-profit association Hartz und Herzlich eV, which runs a social department store in Coburg . In addition, Sauerteig is a co-initiator of the citizens' initiative Rettet den Rosengarten , which aims to preserve the Coburg Rose Garden as a public green space.

In the municipal elections in Bavaria in 2014 , Dominik Sauerteig was elected to the Coburg city council for the first time as an SPD candidate. In November 2019, his party nominated him as a candidate for the mayoral election in 2020 after a battle vote against the incumbent third mayor, Thomas Nowak.

In the first round of the OB elections on March 15, 2020 , sourdough received 27.9 percent of the vote, his strongest competitor Christian Meyer (CSU) united 26.8 percent. On March 29, 2020, there was a runoff between the two, which sourdough won with 57 percent of the vote. The turnout was 60.5 percent. Sourdough replaced Norbert Tessmer (also SPD), who did not run again for election, as Lord Mayor of Coburg.
