Walter May (born December 14, 1900 in Sannerz , district of Schlüchtern , † October 29, 1953 in Berlin ) was a German politician ( SPD ).

Life

The trained teacher joined the SPD in 1926, and in 1930 he joined the Free Teachers' Union .

After the end of the Third Reich, May 1945 became a school councilor in Berlin. For the SPD he was elected to the city council of Greater Berlin in 1946. On July 3, 1947, he was appointed to succeed Siegfried Nestriepke as a councilor for popular education in the Schroeder magistrate .

In the election of the West Berlin city council on December 5, 1948 , May was re-elected to parliament, he was again appointed to the Reuter II magistrate as a public education councilor. The Berlin School Act of 1948 came into being under his leadership. As a representative of Berlin, May also played an important role in the establishment of the German Research University in Berlin-Dahlem and in the conclusion of the state agreement on the establishment of a German research university in Berlin-Dahlem and the financing of German research institutes .

In 1950 he renounced a candidacy for the House of Representatives and a nomination for the Senate. After retiring from politics, he was active as a Hauptschulrat in Berlin-Reinickendorf when he died on October 29, 1953 .

May was buried at the Zehlendorf forest cemetery in Berlin-Nikolassee . The grave was designated as an honorary grave of the State of Berlin until 2014 .

In Gropiusstadt in Berlin's Neukölln district, Walter-May-Weg is named after him and in Berlin-Heiligensee there is the Walter-May-Schullandheim.
