Walter Rieck (born February 1, 1905 in Prenzlau / Uckermark , † November 12, 1990 in Hann. Münden ) was a German wildlife biologist and hunting scientist .

Life

Walter Rieck put the Abitur in the Uckermark from, studied in Berlin and Innsbruck and received his doctorate in 1932 with a thesis on the development of the oral cavity epithelium of Anura . Then he got an assistant position at the Institute for Hunting in Berlin-Zehlendorf . From 1936 to 1943 Rieck headed the professional hunter department in the Reich Hunting Office ; from 1937 he was also head of the Institute for Hunting of the Reich Association of German Hunters. This activity naturally ended in 1945. In 1939 he initiated the magazine for hunting customers , whose editor he remained until 1944.

In the second half of the 1930s, among other things, he carried out surveys on the time when fawns were set . According to his analysis of the dates of birth of 16,687 fawns within what was then the territory of the German Empire, 96% of all fawns are born in May or June; However, the investigation also revealed that the dates can be between the beginning of March and the beginning of September. Rieck published these numbers in 1955 in the magazine for hunting science .

From 1950 Rieck worked at the Institute for Hunting Studies at the University of Göttingen , which he headed from 1968 to 1972, and from 1955 to 1972 he was editor of the Zeitschrift für Jagdwissenschaft . In 1968 he became a co-founder of the working group for wild biology and hunting research centers. Walter Rieck wrote numerous articles in specialist journals; In addition, together with Gerd von Lettow-Vorbeck, he created a reworking of Ferdinand von Raesfeld's work Das Rehwild . With Rudolf Wetzel he wrote the work Diseases of the Wild , which was published in 1962.
