Walter Schläpfer

Walter Schläpfer (born April 5, 1914 in Herisau , † June 1, 1991 in Trogen ; resident in Herisau) was a Swiss historian , librarian , publicist and politician from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Walter Schläpfer was a son of Karl Albert Schläpfer, master upholsterer and councilor , and Anna Bertha Zwicki. In 1949 he married Josefina Alice Fässler, daughter of Johann Baptist Fässler, baker and landlord . He attended the Trogen Cantonal School . By 1939 he completed a degree in history and German in Zurich . From 1941 to 1979 he worked as a cantonal school teacher in Trogen. From 1948 he was Vice Rector . From 1953 to 1986 he was a cantonal librarian. He wrote fundamental works on the history of his home canton: From 1964 to 1972 he worked on Volume 1 and authored Volume 2 of Appenzell History . In 1978 he published the press history of the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden and in 1984 the economic history of the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden up to 1939 . He was editor of the Appenzell Yearbooks from 1953 to 1989 . From 1946 to 1953 he was a member of the Trogen municipal council. From 1951 to 1972 he was a free-thinking Ausserrhoder cantonal councilor . From 1957 to 1970 he presided over the Free Democratic Party of Trogen.
