Walter Sorell

Walter Sorell (* 2. May 1905 in Vienna , † 21st February 1997 in New York City ) was an Austrian-American dance critic, essayist and translator.

Walter Sorell studied German at the University of Vienna from 1924 to 1927 , after which he worked as a freelance journalist and chanson writer. From 1932 to 1934 he directed the theater at the Ottakring adult education center. In 1939 he emigrated to New York via Luxembourg, where he worked as a hand analyst. He worked as a translator of Hermann Hesse's works into American and as a dance critic for various American magazines. From 1958 to 1974 he was a lecturer in dramatic literature and dance at Columbia University (New York). He also wrote biographies about Alma Mahler-Werfel and Gertrude Stein .
