Walter Stein's Bisschop
Walter Herman Jacobus Steins Bisschop (born July 1, 1810 in Amsterdam , Netherlands , † September 7, 1881 in Sydney ) was a Jesuit , Vicar Apostolic of Bombay , then of West Bengal (Calcutta), then Bishop of Auckland , New Zealand . He carried the personal title of archbishop .
Live and act
Walter Stein's Bisschop received his training at the Jesuit colleges in St. Acheul, then in Freiburg in Switzerland and finally in Amiens. In 1832 he entered the Jesuit order as a novice, was ordained a priest on September 8, 1842, and made his perpetual profession in 1849.
Father Steins Bisschop wanted to go on an overseas mission and was sent to India by his superiors. Here he was initially active as a pastor in the Apostolic Vicariate of Bombay .
On October 10, 1860, Pope Pius IX appointed him . Vicar Apostolic of Bombay and Titular Bishop of Nilopolis . Cardinal Matthäus Eustachius Gonella (1811–1870) donated him to his episcopal ordination on June 29, 1861. On January 11, 1867, Walter Steins Bisschop moved from Bombay to Calcutta and served there as Vicar Apostolic of West Bengal, at the same time he was titular Archbishop of Bostra . Here in Calcutta he worked - as before in Bombay - with great commitment, whereby he particularly endeavored to schools and orphanages as well as the missionary work of the Santal tribe .
Bishop Steins Bisschop returned to Europe because of health problems and stayed at the Jesuit college in Conflans-sur-Seine, now a district of Charenton-le-Pont . In 1870 he took part in the 1st Vatican Council as a voting council father .
After his recovery, Bishop Walter Steins Bisschop asked for a new assignment in the mission, whereupon he was appointed Bishop of Auckland in New Zealand on May 15, 1879 . Here he arrived on December 3rd of that year. His activity there was short-lived, the bishop died on September 7, 1881 in Sydney .
