Walter Thiel (anatomist)

Walter Thiel (born October 13, 1919 in Wetzwalde ; † February 3, 2012 in Graz ) was an Austrian anatomist .

Life

He studied medicine in Prague , Königsberg , Breslau and Würzburg , where he was granted an emergency license towards the end of the war. In 1947 he received his doctorate from the University of Graz . From 1960 until his retirement in 1990 he was full professor and head of the Anatomical Institute of the University of Graz. He developed a new preservation method, the so-called Thiel fixation , which, by replacing formalin and carbol with an aqueous salt solution with ethylene glycol, preserves the shape, color and consistency of the organic material and prevents hardening of the prepared tissue.
