Walter Ulrich Guyan

Walter Ulrich Guyan (born January 8, 1911 in Neuhausen am Rheinfall ; † January 18, 1999 in Schaffhausen ) was a Swiss prehistorian and director of the All Saints Museum in Schaffhausen.

Life

After graduating from high school in Schaffhausen, Guyan studied geography at the University of Zurich from 1929 to 1934 . From 1934 he was a curator at the Natural History Museum in Schaffhausen. After receiving his doctorate in 1935, he studied cultural and prehistory in Zurich. From 1942 to 1973 he was director of the Museum zu Allerheiligen in Schaffhausen and part-time Schaffhausen canton archaeologist. In 1944 he was in the cultural landscape history at the University of Zurich habilitation and was from 1953 to 1980 Associate Professor of Cultural Landscape History. From 1949 to 1952 he was President of the Swiss Society for Prehistory and Protohistory , of which he became an honorary member in 1987, and from 1950 to 1958 General Secretary of the International Prehistoric Congress and from 1964 a full member of the German Archaeological Institute .

He wrote numerous books, writings and essays, for example in 1966 when he was excavating an Alemannic grave that was discovered by chance in the desert of Alenfingen near Barzheim . His topics were also primarily the prehistory and early history of the city and the cantons of Schaffhausen and Klettgau , excavations and research results on the sites of the pile dwelling settlement Weier near Thayngen in the Reiat and the Museum zu Allerheiligen . In addition, as museum director, he organized internationally acclaimed art exhibitions.
