Walther Haupt

Julius Albert Walther Haupt (born April 21, 1895 in Dresden ; † November 22, 1990 in Görlitz ) was a German teacher, archivist and numismatist .

Life

Haupt came from the Saxon state capital Dresden, where he also attended school and the teachers' seminar before he started working as a teacher. At a young age he became known for his practical local history lessons. His walks with students became legendary. During this time he was involved in the design of reliefs and hand and wall maps for school lessons. He also took part in the writing of local chronicles, especially von Wehrsdorf .

After the Second World War he made handicrafts, mainly using the art of driving technique, before he became director of the museum on the Oybin . Most recently he worked at the city archive in Görlitz .

He was particularly interested in coin research in Upper Lusatia , the knowledge of which he acquired autodidactically. During his time in Dresden, he received guidance from the director of the local coin cabinet, Walter Schwinkowski. After he became a teacher in Upper Lusatia, he was appointed coin expert for the Society for Prehistory and History in Bautzen . During this time he also presented his first publications on numismatic topics in Saxony and Upper Lusatia, which were to be followed by numerous others in the course of his life. Some of his publications were also printed in Czechoslovakia.

In addition, Walter Haupt also published articles on folklore and local historical topics, such as the interest register of the Marienstern monastery (with Joachim Huth, 1957) or the Meißner diocese articles from 1495 (1968).

Walther Haupt's written estate is now managed as a deposit in the Saxon State Archives - Dresden Main State Archives .
