Walther Hensel (lawyer)

HC Walther Hensel (born October 8, 1899 in Mannheim ; † July 3, 1986 in Düsseldorf ) was a German lawyer and senior city director of Düsseldorf and vice-president of the German Association of Cities .

Hensel was the son of a wealthy Mannheim family. He studied law at the Philipps University of Marburg , the Ruprecht Karls University of Heidelberg and the University of Bonn and joined the K.St.V. Arminia Bonn . In Bonn he also became a member of the Catholic Center Party . In 1926 he completed his studies with a doctorate.

In 1926 he took up a position in the Düsseldorf-Mettmann district , where he became a syndicist in 1927 . After the incorporation of part of the district into the city of Düsseldorf, he became the city syndic.

In 1933 Hensel joined the SA reserve and in 1935 the NSDAP . However, he maintained contact with opposition circles. In November 1937, Hensel was arrested for high treason and finally sentenced to two and a half years in prison in June 1939 , but released from prison for health reasons in September of the same year. He worked for private companies until he was drafted into the armed forces in 1944 .

The US military administration appointed Hensel as head of the pension office in Düsseldorf immediately after the end of the war. In January 1946 Hensel was appointed city director, in August 1946 senior city director. Hensel held this office until 1964. 1955 was a member of the personnel appraisal committee for the armed forces of the Bundeswehr and from 1962 to 1965 President of the German Hospital Society (DKG).

Hensel received an honorary doctorate from the Medical Academy in Düsseldorf and has had numerous high national and international awards. Walther-Hensel-Straße in the Düsseldorf district of Lörick is named after him.
