Walther Lammers

Walther Lammers (born January 25, 1914 in Neumünster ; † June 6, 1990 in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe ) was a German historian .

Walther Lammers graduated from the Holstenschule in Neumünster in 1932 . From 1932 to 1937 he studied theology and philosophy, history and German at the University of Kiel , where he received his doctorate in 1937. He passed his state examination a year later. He was a member of the NSDAP . During the Second World War he worked as a soldier and officer in the Wehrmacht . After his release from American captivity, he held a tutor position at the University of Hamburg from 1947 to 1951 . Since 1948 he has also been teaching in Hamburg. His habilitation took place in Hamburg in 1952. In 1953/54 he was a private lecturer in Hamburg. From 1959 to 1965 he taught at the Department of History as an adjunct professor. From 1965 until his retirement in 1982 he was full professor for Middle and Modern History at the University of Frankfurt am Main . In 1968 Lammers was Dean of the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Frankfurt am Main.

Lammers did research on medieval history. His academic work focuses on constitutional and imperial history, military history, historiography, the history of mentality, the history of science and the history of Schleswig-Holstein. Lammers had been a member of the Constance Working Group for Medieval History since 1966 . His academic students include Elsbet Orth , Joachim Ehlers and Frank Göttmann .
