Elsbet Orth (born April 8, 1937 in Darmstadt , † November 16, 1991 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German historian . She made lasting merits in researching the Palatinate , Frankfurt's relations with the surrounding area, feuding and the courtly-knightly culture.

Live and act

Elsbet Orth came from a family based in Hesse. She graduated from high school in 1957. She completed an apprenticeship at the Institute for Broadcasting Technology in Nuremberg and worked as a sound engineer until October 1965 . She then studied history, political science and German at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . In 1971 she finished her studies with her doctorate, supervised by Walther Lammers , on the feuds of the imperial city of Frankfurt am Main in the late Middle Ages . Orth has been teaching at the history seminar in Frankfurt for two decades since 1971.

Orth dealt with Frankfurt's relationship to its surrounding area in the late Middle Ages. In doing so, she did basic work for the history of the city and region in the source development. In her dissertation she was able to prove 229 feuds for Frankfurt between 1381 and 1425. According to Fred Schwind , Orth “gave starting points for researching the relationships between late medieval cities and their environment by carefully and comprehensively exhausting their source material beyond their actual topic”. In her 1979 essay, Official Accounts as a Source of Late Medieval Territorial and Economic History , she was able to make this brittle type of source, mainly from the reign of Landgrave Ludwig I , fruitful for a wide range of disciplines such as personal, legal, administrative, agricultural and building history. Another area of work was the Palatinate Research, which has a certain tradition in the history seminar of the University of Frankfurt. In 1985/86 Orth published an almost 250-page article about the Frankfurt Palatinate as part of the research project “The German Royal Palaces” being worked on by the Max Planck Institute for History . According to Joachim Ehlers , Orth successfully tested the viability of the conception of the research project “German Royal Palaces”. After Hellmuth Gensicke Orth yielded "a synopsis of the current state of research with detailed evidence and extensive Regesten the numerous royal visits 794-1255 and all other rich historically important events, meetings, court and court days and celebrations in Frankfurt". In addition, through new archaeological findings, it was able to provide numerous new results and suggestions for local and imperial history.

In the area of history, she was involved in numerous series of programs on the Hessian Broadcasting Company with topics such as “The imperial cities of the Wetterau ”, “The development of taxes in the Franconian Empire ” or “The imperial coronation of Charlemagne ” . On the occasion of the 1200th anniversary of Frankfurt, she conceived the contribution "Frankfurt am Main in the early and high Middle Ages". Orth had been a member of the Frankfurt Historical Commission since 1983 . Outside of her actual research area, she edited volumes 10 " Verfassungspatriotismus " and 11 "Sprache und Politik" for the edition of the collected writings of Dolf Sternberger .

Orth died on November 16, 1991. In memory of the late Frankfurt mediaevalist, a colloquium on Frankfurt's medieval history was held on April 8, 2002, on the occasion of her 65th birthday. Heribert Müller published the resulting seven articles in 2004.
