Walther Leonhard Wangerin

Walther Leonhard Wangerin (born April 15, 1884 in Giebichenstein near Halle , † April 19, 1938 in Danzig-Langfuhr ) was a German botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Wangerin ".

Life

Wangerin studied mathematics, physics and biology at the Universities of Halle and Berlin from 1902 to 1906 . After graduating as Dr. phil. and the state examination for the higher teaching post (both in 1906) he was employed in 1908 as a senior teacher in Burg (near Magdeburg) . In 1910 he moved to Königsberg (Prussia) , in 19134 to Danzig , where he became a lecturer in the same year, and in 1922 extraordinary associate professor of botany and director of the Botanical Institute of the TH Danzig . Since 1920 he was department director at the Gdansk Museum of Natural History and Prehistory and from 1921 natural monument curator of the Free City of Gdansk .

For the plant The plant kingdom of Adolf Engler worked Wangerin 1910 the plant families Garryaceae, Nyssaceae, Alangiaceae and Cornaceae. He was also a collaborator at Kirchner, Loew and Schroeter: Life history of the flowering plants of Central Europe , 1927–1938. In 1914 he became a member of the Leopoldina .

Honors

The plant genus Wangerinia E. Franz from the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae) was named after him.
