Coat of arms of Slavonia

The coat of arms of Slavonia ( Croatian Grb Slavonije ), as present in the coat of arms crown of arms of Croatia is used is in light blue a six-pointed golden star in gold over a horizontal bar in red , up and down accompanied by a narrower separation in silver ( "Knight Street "). In the beam a right- handing white-bellied black marten .

interpretation

Banovac silver coin depicting a marten (around 1270).

The marten (Croatian kuna ) already adorned the medieval Slavonian silver coin Banovac and also gave its name to today's Croatian currency . The two silver stripes in the coat of arms represent the Sava and the Drava and symbolize the position of Slavonia as an intermediate river country.

Letter of arms for the Kingdom of Slavonia, issued by King Vladislav II in Buda on December 8, 1496 ( Croatian State Archives , 2009).

As the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Slavonia , the bar was at times also made as a wave bar and in green. In a blazon from 1790 it says:

"Between two silver wave-shaped crossbars a naturally colored marten running to the right in the green field, with a blue head and foot edge, in the first of which a golden star can be seen because of the Kingdom of Slavonia."

The interpretation of the two wave bars as the rivers Save and Drava is historical, later the star is also expressly interpreted as Mars , around 1804 :

"Blue, in it a marten running to the right in the green field, between two parallel silver streams, in the upper part, the golden constellation of Mars, because of the Kingdom of Slavonia."
