The Warinsee is located in the Rostock district within the municipality of Lalendorf in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and is about 15 kilometers east of Güstrow and about nine kilometers west of Teterow . The lake is part of a chain of lakes north of Lalendorf around Niegleve . It is around two kilometers long and 700 meters wide. The oval, poorly structured body of water lies in a shallow, swampy depression. The lake is very shallow (maximum 4 meters) and surrounded by a belt of reeds. There are three smaller islands in the lake, the largest of which is called Großer Werder . The federal road 104 runs south of the lake and the Neustrelitz – Warnemünde railway line runs west .
The Warinsee was designated as a bird sanctuary in 2011 . The northern part of the lake is part of the FFH area Nebeltal with tributaries, connected lakes and adjacent forests .
