Warrior is an English New Wave of British Heavy Metal band from Newcastle upon Tyne that was founded in 1979, split up in 1984 and has been active again since 2014.

history

The band was formed in 1979. It initially consisted of singer Eddy Smith, guitarists Dave Hall and Tony Watson, bassist Barry "Baz" Smith and drummer Rob Mills. The band was heard for the first time on the Neat Records sampler Lead Weight with the song Flying Hight . The same label released the EP Dead When It Comes to Love in 1982 , which contains the theme song, Stab You in the Back and Kansas City . The songs were recorded live in the studio. Hall was then replaced by Dave Dawson. An alternate version of Kansas City was recorded for the Neat Records sampler 60 Minutes Plus , which was also released in 1982. In the same year the live album Live in a Dive! recorded, which includes the songs Addiction , Troops and Rock and Roll Star . The publication also took place in 1982. In the following time, the band broke off contact with Neat Records and changed their line-up so that they consisted of bassist Steve Telford, singer Eddie Halliday and drummer Sean Taylor in addition to Watson and Dawson. In mid-1983 the EP For Europe Only was released as a self- release , which contains new versions of Flying High and Kansas City, the songs Prisoner , Suicide and Warrior . The recordings had taken a day. The EP was distributed by Neon Records and Bullet Records . For the end of the year the band planned to release another EP, with a circulation of several thousand copies. Martin Clerkin was the new singer and Paul Irwin was the new bass player. Instead, the EP Breakout appeared in early 1984 with an edition of a few hundred copies. The recordings for this had taken place in the Impulse Studios of Neat Records. Malcom Dick can be heard as a guest drummer. In addition to the title song, the sound carrier contains the songs Dragon Slayer and Take Your Chance . Shortly afterwards, the band began work on their debut album, Invasion Imminent , for which a release was planned for August 1984. Demo recordings were sent to various labels, but the group could not get a record deal. Since the production costs for an album were significantly higher than for a single, the group could not realize the release and it came to a breakup in 1984.

After Sean Taylor suggested a reunion, Warrior reunited in 2014. The line-up, consisting of the already known members Dawson, Taylor and Halliday, was supplemented by the new bassist Duncan Emmerson and the new guitarist Gwaether Bloom. In the same year the group played at the Brofest in Newcastle. A year later the group could be seen at the Headbangers Open Air and released the Oblivion EP .

style

According to Malc Macmillan in The NWOBHM Encyclopedia , the sampler song Flying High falls between Blackwych and Tygers of Pan Tang . Dead When It Comes to Love shows a songwriting improvement. The title song is comparable to music by the band High Treason , while the other two songs are more in the style of Saber . The self-titled song on For Europe Only contains a shader- like drum solo . Due to the higher vocals, the EP Breakout reminds me more of groups like Judas Priest , Grim Reaper , Mithrandir and Legend from Kent . Matthias Mader wrote in NWoBHM New Wave of British Heavy Metal The glory Days that the group plays rough up-tempo heavy metal on Dead When It Comes to Love . Allmusic's Eduardo Rivadavia described the music as raw heavy metal in the style of Saber, Weapon and early Tygers of Pan Tang. In his book The Collector's Guide of Heavy Metal Volume 2: The Eighties, Martin Popoff reviewed For Europe Only and called the material classic Music of the NWoBHM. The drum solo is jazzy . However, even then, the material was no longer up-to-date and would have fitted better with earlier NWoBHM samplers such as Roksnax or New Electric Warriors .
