Vasily Nikolayevich Kolomojez ( Russian Василий Николаевич Коломоец , Ukrainian Василь Миколайович Коломоєць * thirtieth November 1918 in Zhovti Vody , yekaterinoslav governorate , Soviet Russia ; † 12. October 1986 ) was a Ukrainian officer in the Soviet Army and Hero of the Soviet Union .

biography

Wassili Kolomojez came from a working class family from Schowti Vody. In 1938 he completed his studies at the Academy of Mining Sciences .

In 1939 he was drafted into the Red Workers and Peasants Army . In 1940 he completed his training at the Air Force School in Sevastopol . From February 1942 he fought in the major units of the Western Front : the Kalininer Front , the Central Front and the 2nd Belarusian Front . He was promoted to first lieutenant and in March 1943 appointed commander of the 49th Fighter Regiment of the Red Army. He then took part in the tank battle for Kursk , in the liberation of Ukraine , Belarus and Poland and in the last battles for Berlin . He was also promoted to captain .

By October 1944, Kolomojez had 365 sorties and 65 dogfights behind him. By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet , Kolomojez was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on February 23, 1945 for “courage and heroism in the aerial battle against the German-fascist invaders”. In addition, he received the Order of Lenin , the Alexander Nevsky Order , twice the Order of the Red Banner , the Order of the Great Patriotic War and the Order of the Red Star .

In 1950 Kolomojez graduated from the Air Force Military Academy "JA Gagarin" and was promoted to colonel . In 1957 he was discharged from the army and returned to Schowti Vody, where he worked for the company VostGOK and died in 1986.

A memorial plaque dedicated to Kolomojez is attached to the building of an air sports association in Krivoy Rog .
