content
In 20 stories that were filmed in ten different countries around the globe, Watermark tells of the necessity of life and the beauty of the element water, which is the basis of all life and has always had a strong attraction for people. The documentary forms a narrative arc from the largest dam in the world in Xiluodu, China, to the dried-up river delta of the once mighty Colorado River and the world's largest surfing competition, the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach , to the Kumbh Mela Festival in Allahabad (India), where 30 Millions of devout Hindus were washed clean with a simultaneous ritual bath in the Ganges .
Awards
In addition to the aforementioned awards at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Canadian Screen Awards in 2013 , the film received nominations from the Directors Guild of Canada ( Allan King Award For Excellence in Documentary for Jennifer Baichwal) and the Vancouver Film Critics Circle ( Best Canadian Film and Best Canadian Documentary ).
reception
The time is “impressed” by the documentary, as the recordings are shown “with high-resolution images, with calm and distance”, “although the camera is usually right in the middle”. Critic.de writes that the film Watermark relies too much on "quantity instead of quality, sidelights instead of intensive illumination". In addition, “no overarching principle” can be identified. Nevertheless, Edward Burtynsky's "commitment is honorable".
