Wayne St John O'Sullivan (born February 25, 1974 in Akrotiri , Cyprus ) is an Irish football coach and former football player who spent his career in the lower-class professional leagues in England and at the highest level in Australia.

Player career

Wayne O'Sullivan came to Swindon Town in 1988 while still at school and in 1990 received a trainee contract in the youth department under the direction of John Trollope , before signing his first professional contract in the summer of 1992. O'Sullivan's competitive debut was on September 1, 1992 in the Anglo-Italian Cup against Oxford United , but it was almost two years before his next appearance. After a year in the Premier League , Swindon was relegated back to the second division in 1994 and O'Sullivan made his league debut in the First Division on Matchday 1 of the 1994/95 season, a 2-0 win over Port Vale , under John Gorman . Despite the success of the opening game, a turbulent season developed, in November 1994 Gorman was replaced by player-coach Steve McMahon , under whom O'Sullivan continued to be used regularly, but was unable to stop the negative trend. Swindon finally ended the season in fourth from bottom of the table and was thus passed through to the Second Division . There O'Sullivan denied as a regular with a large workload in midfield headquarters large parts of the 1995/96 season, which Swindon completed as a champion and the associated direct rise; In addition, he received several appointments to the Irish U-21 national team because of his performance . Back in the second division O'Sullivan lost his regular place to the new signing Scott Leitch and therefore initially replaced the injured Jason Drysdale on the left-back position before he was ousted by Gary Elkins .

Unsatisfied with his playing times, he asked for a transfer during the 1997 summer break and moved to Cardiff City in the Third Division for £ 75,000 . At Cardiff, O'Sullivan initially established himself as a right-wing attacking full-back, who regularly took part in the attacking game and was able to convince there with a tricky game in one-on-one. The following season he spent most of the time in right midfield, after Mark Delaney's departure to the first division Aston Villa , he took over his position on the right defensive side, but struggled to build on the performance of the fast and popular full-back. Despite promotion to the Second Division and a new contract offer from Cardiff, O'Sullivan decided against staying in the summer of 1999 and moved back to the fourth division for Plymouth Argyle on a free transfer . There he was due to his consistently good performances in his two seasons at Plymouth and acted either in the right-back position or in the central midfield. He was voted "Player of the Year" by Plymouth fans for the 2000/01 season.

Despite this appreciation, he refused an extension of his expiring contract with Plymouth in the summer of 2001 and instead moved to Australia in the National Soccer League (NSL) to Parramatta Power . There he was a regular for two years as well as in the 2003/04 season with Northern Spirit . With the setting of the NSL at the end of the 2003/04 season, he temporarily left Australia and spent the following months in Singapore with Geylang United . At the end of the year he returned to Australia and kept fit at the Sydney Olympic in the New South Wales Premier League before signing a contract with the Central Coast Mariners for the newly formed professional game class A-League .

In the premiere season , O'Sullivan formed the midfield of the Mariners with André Gumprecht , Noel Spencer and Damien Brown , who, after finishing third in the regular season, reached the championship final, which was lost 1-0 to Sydney FC around superstar Dwight Yorke . After missing the place in the plaf-off round in the 2006/07 season due to four defeats in the last five game days, O'Sullivan, Spencer and Vuko Tomasevic received from coach Lawrie McKinna , under whom he was already active at Northern Spirit , no more new contract.

Coaching career

Thereupon O'Sullivan ended his professional career and belonged from 2007 to 2009 under Ricki Herbert to the coaching staff of the New Zealand A-League club Wellington Phoenix . He previously obtained a degree in education from Sydney University . During the 2007/08 season O'Sullivan was next to Stu Jacobs one of two assistant coaches, the following season he was mainly responsible for video analysis. From 2009 to 2011 and in the 2012/13 season he coached the women's team of Newcastle Jets United in the W-League .
