The white-rim triggerfish ( Sufflamen chrysopterum ) lives in the Indo-Pacific from the coasts of East and South Africa to Japan , Lord Howe Island and Samoa in lagoons and outer reefs. In the Red Sea and the Gulf of Oman it is replaced by the very similar blue-throated triggerfish ( Sufflamen albicaudatus ). White-edged triggerfish are territorial solitary animals and prefer shallow zones or terraced reefs with open sand, scree and rock surfaces that are only sparsely covered with corals .

Young fish are dark brown above and white below. The coloring of the adult animals is variable.

The fish, which grow to a length of 30 centimeters, feed on various bottom-dwelling invertebrates .
