The white-tailed nightjar ( Hydropsalis cayennensis , syn. Caprimulgus cayennensis ) is a species of bird from the family of the nightjar (Caprimulgidae).

It comes in Brazil , Costa Rica , Ecuador , Guyana , Leeward Islands , Isla Margarita , Colombia , Martinique , Netherlands Antilles , Panama , Suriname , Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela before.

Their distribution area includes subtropical or tropical , temporarily moist or flooded lowland forest and grassland , typically at least partially tree-covered habitats .

description

The white-tailed nightjar is 20–23 cm tall, the male weighs between 30 and 40, the female between 25 and 46 g. The top is gray-brown, black-brown striped, the female is darker in color. A wide cinnamon-colored neck band is striking. The throat is white, yellow-brown in the female. The tail is rectangular with a slight notch. In the male, the underside of the tail is predominantly white with narrow white vertical stripes on the upper side, there is also a white wing band on the hand wings.

The call of the male is described as a series of short, high-pitched whistles “pt-cheeeeeee” or “pik-speeeeeea”.

Way of life

The food consists of moths , beetles , dragonflies , crickets and grasshoppers , which are caught briefly jumping up from the ground or flying close to the ground.

The breeding season is between February and June in Costa Rica, between March and July in Colombia, between April and June in Venezuela and between February and December in Suriname.

Hazardous situation

The white-tailed nightjar is not considered to be endangered ( Least Concern ).
