Type Nunatak

The Weigelnunatak is an approximately 20 × 40 meter nunatak in Queen Maud Land in East Antarctica . In the northern area of the Kottasberg, it protrudes about 10 meters from the ice between Waglenabben and Laudalkammen . On February 24, 1997, the Nunatak was marketed with a brass mark as a geodetic benchmark after it had been used as such since 1986.

The Nunatak was named in 2000 after Ursula Weigel (1961–1998), who took part in several Antarctic and Artkis expeditions (to the Greenland ice sheet ); Among other things, she wintered in 1990/91 on the Georg-von-Neumayer-Station . The German State Committee for the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and for the International Arctic Science Committee (ISAC) accepted Cord Drücker's proposal for a name from the Alfred Wegener Institute on September 25, 2000 after the Standing Committee on Geographical Names ( StAGN) of the German-speaking countries approved it on June 15 of the same year.
