Weimar-West is a district of Weimar in the state of Thuringia . It lies west of the city center and was built as a prefabricated housing estate from 1978 .

traffic

Weimar-West is bounded in the north by the Erfurt – Halle – Leipzig railway line and in the east by the Berkaer Bahn . To the south, the course of the Asbach represents the district boundary. To the west extends the part of the landscape, “Paradise”, which has been protected since 2001 and consists of a wetland area in the Asbach lowland and fallow land . The district can therefore only be reached via two streets and two public footpaths.

The connection to the local public transport is very good. The district is connected to the Deutsche Bahn network through a stop on the Berkaer Bahn. The city bus routes 3A / 3b and 7 provide direct connections with the city center, the northern urban area ( Schöndorf ) and the western districts of Gaberndorf and Tröbsdorf .

history

In 1977 a German-Slavic settlement from the 9th and 10th centuries was uncovered during the preparatory clearing work for the construction of the new district in the area of the “ Rabenwäldchen ” basin . With over 2500 ceramic fragments, this site was one of the most important in Thuringia.

After the new GDR development area Weimar-Nord (built around 1965), construction of Weimar-West began in 1978 . The foundation stone for the first residential building was laid on July 20, 1978.

The official name of the city administration for the new residential area (where the popular allotment garden settlement Paradies had been until the mid-1970s ) was “Weimar - Am Stadion” in order to avoid any associations with Berlin (West) . The vernacular remained unimpressed with "Weimar-West" - if only from the logic that resulted from the name of the other new development area Weimar-Nord .

By 1987, 3,660 flats were built in Weimar-West using prefabricated panels, which solved an acute problem of housing supply for the city of Weimar. The social facilities planned according to the development concept were only partially implemented. This resulted in 3 children's combinations, 3 schools with sports halls, a medical center, a pharmacy and a milk bar . In the central area, a department store for everyday goods was created. Smaller service facilities such as the post office and savings bank branch were accommodated as functional sub-storage on the ground floor of an 11-storey apartment block on a pedestrian axis. Other facilities - such as a library or a restaurant in the residential area - were not implemented due to financial constraints. Buildings originally planned with more flexible apartment floor plans or facade design were also standardized. The evangelical community center "Paul Schneider" was inaugurated in 1988 and in 1998 a bell tower was added. From 1994 to 1995, Weimar-West received a redesigned center with the Straßburger Platz.

Weimar-West was originally designed for around 10,000 residents. The modest comfort of a new apartment at the time - district heating, hot water, balcony -, the many communal open spaces in the inner courtyards and on the edge of the residential area and the good social and age-related mix of residents made the area a popular residential area for a long time. But the physical condition of the building structure and the infrastructure was increasingly neglected. As a result, and also as a consequence of the growing housing supply in other parts of the city after 1990, a decline in the number of residents, but also the increasing loss of attractiveness and the associated concentration of social problems can be observed. Now only about half as many people live in Weimar's Weststadt. A large part of the apartments is managed by the municipal Weimarer Wohnstätte GmbH and the non-profit housing cooperative Weimar eG.

An urban development model is available for Weimar-West. As a "district with special development needs - the social city " is the further development of the district by the Luth. Pastoral care workers for Weimar-West promoted acceptance into the federal-state program of the same name in order to sustainably upgrade the residential area.

The district now has a relatively good infrastructure. In the center of the district there is a business and shopping center around Straßburger Platz. A second supermarket has existed on the southern periphery since 1995.

In Weimar-West there is the Albert-Schweitzer-Grundschule, the Carl-August-Musäus-Regelschule, the Humboldt-Gymnasium , two day-care centers, a retirement home, a nursing home, a children’s and youth club and many sports facilities. In the former medical center there has been a community center and multi-generational house since 2005 , in which a large number of cultural initiative groups are located under one roof. The district manager for Weimar-West also has his office here.

The evangelical community center "Paul Schneider" is the center of the pastoral care district VI of the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Weimar with its own parish office.
