The Alzinger winery in Unterloiben near Dürnstein is an Austrian winery in the Wachau wine-growing region in Lower Austria .

history

The success story of the Alzinger winery began when Leo Alzinger (* 1946) first bottled the 1982 vintage. By then, the Alzinger family had delivered grapes to the winegrowers' cooperative. After Leo Alzinger started filling the bottles, the winery rose rapidly. Alzinger wines already made a name for themselves in specialist circles with the 1985 and 1986 vintages. Alzinger won the Vinaria win with the 1987 Grüner Veltliner . The complete breakthrough came with the 1990 vintage. The British wine critic Stuart Pigott had organized tastings of 12 Rieslings each from Alsace , Germany and Austria in London , New York and Paris . Alzinger's Riesling came out on top.

Since bottling began in the 1982 vintage, one good location after the other has gradually been added. Alzinger's Grüner Veltliner and Rieslings from vineyards such as Steinertal or Loibenberg were soon among the finest items made from Wachau grapes. The winery is known for the enormous storage potential of the wines. The winery has been managed by Leo Alzinger (* 1979) since 2014. After redesigning the company building, the Alzinger winery was awarded the architecture prize for exemplary building in Lower Austria in 2017. The winery is a member of the Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus .

Vineyards, varieties

The vineyard area is 10 hectares (as of 2017), exclusively with white grape varieties , mainly Grüner Veltliner and Rheinriesling , but also planted with Chardonnay . The most famous wines come from the Steinertal and Loibenberg locations and are often developed as emeralds or Federspiel . The remaining vines are spread over the vineyards Frauenweingarten , Mühlpoint , Hochstrasser , Höhereck , Hollerin and Liebenberg . Hugh Johnson describes the winery as "an outstanding estate in the Wachau with concentrated, mineral Riesling and Grüner Veltliner".
