Pfaffl winery

The R&A Pfaffl winery is an Austrian winery in the Weinviertel wine-growing region in Stetten . The winery is run by the Pfaffl family as a family business.

history

In 1978, Roman and Adelheid Pfaffl took over their parents' farm with 23 hectares of agriculture and 0.7 hectares of viticulture. At first, 100 percent of the wine was sold in the small Buschenschank in Stetten. The new managers bought a house in the nearby town of Korneuburg and converted it into the “Laterndl Pfaffl” wine tavern . Pfaffl 1983 dealt extensively with quality wines and now filled his wines for the first time in bottles of (0.75 liter bottles). From 1984 to 1989 there was an expansion of the area on various vineyards. Roman Pfaffl campaigned for the Weinviertel to become Austria's first DAC area.

The operation was grown in 1989 to a size of 5.2 hectares, with expansion to seven hectares of vineyards in Münichsthal , mainly terraces Sonnleiten that after purchasing cleared and newly planted were. In 1991 Pfaffl began to export its wines abroad. In 1992, a new press house and a new storage cellar were built, with temperature-controlled tanks, pneumatic presses, reblers and a free fall wine press being added. 1996 Pfaffl was in the Austrian wine magazine Falstaff for Winemaker of the Year chosen. In 2000 the company had grown to a size of 30 hectares. The wine tavern has now been closed and the full concentration has been placed on viticulture. This was followed by the takeover of the Bockfließ castle winery (around 10 hectares). In 2002 the cellar was expanded. In 2003, the old building block was fundamentally rebuilt, which largely completed the modernization of the winery. Later, the barrique store and a machine hall were rebuilt and the press house was enlarged.

The company had grown to a total of 53 hectares in 2004, and around 5 hectares in Vienna-Stammersdorf were also taken over. In 2008 the new press with inert gas system was used for the first time . It enables pressing in the absence of oxygen. In 2011 the siblings Roman Josef Pfaffl and Heidemarie Fischer took over the winery from their parents. Another white wine cellar was added in 2012. The company is largely export-oriented. In 2016 Pfaffl received the “European Winery of the Year” award from the renowned US wine magazine “Wine Enthusiast”. "Hardly any other winery has contributed more to attracting Grüner Veltliner worldwide attention," the magazine justified its decision.

Vineyards, varieties

The vineyard area is currently 100 hectares (as of 2016), of which 70 percent are planted with white grape varieties. The Grüner Veltliner is the most important grape variety on the farm, followed by Blauer Zweigelt and St. Laurent . In addition to Riesling , Chardonnay , Sauvignon Blanc , Pinot Blanc , Cabernet Sauvignon , Merlot and Pinot Noir produced. Roman Pfaffl, who built the winery together with his wife Adelheid, was referred to in the press in the 1980s as “Mr. Veltliner ”. The most important single- location wines of the winery are the Grüner Veltliner from the Zeiseneck , Haidviertel , Hundsleiten and Goldjoch locations . The Riesling terraces Sonnleiten and Am Berg are also important .
