Multiple winner of the four-masted bark Passat
Wheat regattas were informal regattas with tall ships and were held on the route from Australia to Europe . These regattas were mainly about the fame, prestige and honor of the ship on which the sailor was sailing. In order to encourage a quick journey home with cargo, the individual shipping companies also paid a premium for the fastest journey home. After being loaded with wheat in the ports of the Spencer Gulf , the ships had to compete simultaneously in June of that year. The way around Cape Horn (South America) was mandatory for the trip home to Europe .
The last wheat regatta via Cape Horn for merchant ships under sail took place in 1949. The ships were the Passat and the Pamir .
