Eric Newby (born December 6, 1919 Hammersmith Bridge in London , † October 20, 2006 in Guildford ) was an English writer and author of travel literature and travel guides .

Life

After attending St. Paul's School in London , Newby worked for an advertising agency for two years before he hired as an apprentice on the Finnish windjammer Moshulu in 1938 and sailed on it from Europe to Australia and as part of a wheat regatta via Cape Horn back to Europe. He later described this journey in his books The Last Grain Race and Learning the Ropes (subtitle: An Apprentice in the Last of the Windjammers , in German years of apprenticeship before the mast ). His book titles ("The Last Wheat Race", "Last Windjammer") are, however, misleading: In fact, Newby did not take part in the last wheat regatta, since there were two more races after 1939; the last wheat regatta was not held between Pamir and Passat until 1949 . The Moshulu was by no means the last tall ship. Windjammers are still used today; the last tall ship on a cargo journey , however, was the Drumcliff , which sank in 1958 .

During the Second World War, Eric Newby served with the Scottish Black Watch Regiment and in the Navy and was captured off the Italian coast. For three years (1942-45) he was in Italian captivity in Parma . During a short escape, he was hidden by a Slovenian family, where he met Wanda, his future wife and travel companion. He later described his experiences in his memoir under the title Love and War in the Apennines . A film based on this book called In Love and War was released in 2001 with Calum Blue as a newby.

After the war, Newby worked temporarily in the fashion industry before embarking on an expedition to the Hindu Kush of Afghanistan . This later resulted in his most famous work, A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush, in which Wilfred Thesiger also appears. Between 1963 and 1973, Newby was a travel editor for The Observer newspaper . In 1994 he was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) and in 2001 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the British Guild of Travel Writers .

In addition to his books, Newby also worked on documentaries for the BBC . On October 20, 2006, he died at the age of 86.
