Welf Bronger (born July 2, 1932 in Hamburg ; † June 3, 2012 ) was a German chemist and professor of inorganic chemistry at RWTH Aachen University .

Life

Bronger studied chemistry first at the University of Innsbruck and later at the University of Münster , where he received his doctorate in 1961 in Wilhelm Klemm's group on platinum alloys with base metals. The topic had a potential application in the BMA process of Degussa AG, in whose research area he changed after graduation. After a brief activity in industry, he returned to the University of Münster, where he completed his habilitation in 1966. In 1969 he accepted a chair for inorganic and analytical chemistry at RWTH Aachen University. From 1978 to 1979 he was dean of the natural science faculty. In 1997 he retired there. He was co-editor of the Journal of Inorganic and General Chemistry . After his retirement he worked in an advisory capacity for the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids in Dresden .

research

The main focus of his research was the synthesis and structure elucidation of intermetallic phases by converting oxides of base metals with hydrogen in the presence of noble metals. The investigation and representation of ternary sulfides , selenides and tellurides of the main and sub-group metals with the general composition A x M y X z (A = alkali metal, M = transition metal and X = S, Se or Te) was another focus of his research. By reacting alkali metal hydrides with transition metals in a high-pressure hydrogen atmosphere of up to 5500 bar, he obtained metal hydrides of the general formula A x M y H z, for example in A 2 PtH 6 , Na 2 PdH 4 and A 3 ReH 10 . In addition to X-ray examination methods , he used neutron diffraction experiments to determine the position of the hydrogen atoms in the deuterated compounds .

He discovered low-spin iron (III) in sulfidic tetrahedral chains and tetravalent platinum hydride. The GDCh honored his research on ternary metal hydrides in 1999 with the Wilhelm-Klemm-Prize.
