history

The river demarcated Okanogan County from Kittitas County until the reorganization in 1899 and was the center of Chelan County .

The water of the Wenatchee River and its tributaries has been used primarily for irrigation of orchards since 1891. There are two small dams along the river: Tumwater Canyon Dam, west of Leavenworth , and Dryden Dam, which is near the town of Dryden . The Tumwater Canyon Dam originally provided power for the nearly three-kilometer-long railway tunnel to bring the trains over the Cascade Range near Stevens Pass . From 1928 the electricity was used to operate the Wenatchee to Skykomish railway line .

Water pollution

The last three studies by the Washington State Department of Ecology have shown that toxic chemicals that were banned decades ago are still in the environment, concentrate in animals and threaten them and the people around them. In 2007, the Washington Department of Health advised people not to eat the fish down from Leavenworth because of the elevated PCB levels .
