The Wendenturm is one of the seven former defense towers of the Braunschweig Landwehr , which was built in 1376 as the outer fortification of the city of Braunschweig .

geography

The turning tower is located on Kreisstraße  2 (Gifhorner Straße) in the Rühme district , south of the Braunschweig Nord motorway junction , which connects the A 391 (west bypass ) with the A 2 . The Mittelland Canal and the Braunschweig Harbor are located northwest of the Wendenturm . In the wider area are the Ölpersee , the Schunteraue and the Querumer Forest.

history

In 1390 the village of Rühme is mentioned in a document in connection with the construction of the Landwehr. After the city of Braunschweig decided to fortify its entire urban area with land defenses, high earth walls with a deep, outer moat were also raised in Rühme. The turning tower was probably built between 1384 and 1390 in order to control the road connecting the city to the north. The road could be blocked by a customs barrier. The tower was used as a quarter and as a signal tower. It had to be laid down in the 18th century due to its dilapidation. The exact position of the tower can no longer be localized, as no remains of the structure above ground have been preserved.

In 1777 a bar called Wendenturm was built, which has been used as an inn since then. Opposite this, on the other side of the street, were a forge, a wheelwright and the customs building, from which the import duty for the goods of the farmers and merchants who wanted to enter the city was levied. Since Rühme was part of the Landwehr, the place was subject to the Brunswick tax and customs administration.

Remnants of the former Landwehr are in the garden of the restaurant Wendenturm and in the school yard of the elementary school Rühme. The former defense tower was also included in the coat of arms of the Rühme district in 1980.
