When Tom Wesnik and his wife Esther come home from a party, police cars and fire brigade block their way. You park in front of a house from which three coffins are being carried. The photojournalist Wesnik quickly takes his camera and shoots wildly. Only after a while does he notice that everyone present, including Chief Inspector Franz and Public Prosecutor Stiller, are staring at him in horror because it was Wesnik's son Lukas who has just shot three people. Then he wanted to kill himself, which luckily Lukas had not managed, but he is now in a coma. Wesnik can't believe what he has to hear and is very dismissive of the police.

After Lukas wakes up from his coma, he can hardly remember anything. While Esther is emotionally attached to her son, Tom gets into a conflict of conscience. Between hope and despair, he asks himself whether he failed as a father or was even complicit. After all, it was his weapon that Lukas had used. In the process, he becomes increasingly estranged from his son and does not find the right time to visit him in custody.

It will be difficult for the family to continue living in their place, because not only Tom, but also his daughter Marlene experience rejection everywhere. Tom therefore wants to accept his company's offer to go to America for a report. At the last moment, however, he changed his mind after his son had just called him from remand. But his wife and daughter went to Berlin because they couldn't stand it anymore in Sedlitz . Tom follows them after an arson attack takes place on his car.

Luka's lawyer can convince his father to finally visit his son. She also brings him Lukas things that the public prosecutor had confiscated. In it, Tom finds drawings by his son depicting extreme scenes of violence. When he shows this to his wife, he learns that Lukas had had therapy. Because he was ashamed of his fears, he hadn't told his father about it. Tom immediately contacts the therapist. He admits that he may have ended the therapy too early. He had seen vague signs of schizophrenia in him, but they were not clear. He evaluates the violence drawings as a means of reducing fears. Likewise, murder is often also prevented suicide. Nevertheless, he considers Lukas to be guilty, which his father does not see at all. He is now finally on Lukas side and denounces everything that turned his son into a murderer: computer games, violent films and Lukas girlfriend Katja he is complicit. In doing so, he has to admit to having caused most of Luke's problems himself. His constant absence from work, especially when his son needed him very much, was probably an important factor in his emotional development.

In court, Lukas made a comprehensive confession, and it turned out that he had shot Katja's parents because they would always have been "completely caustic" to his girlfriend. She was under house arrest that day, which is why he and his friend Denis went to see her, which then escalated. He wanted to show Katja how much he loved her and therefore even became a murderer for her.

The next day, Luka's parents received a message that their son had attempted suicide and was in the hospital. After a short time his condition is no longer life-threatening and in a farewell letter to his parents he asks them not to separate because of him. Only he would be to blame for the whole situation and since he didn't want to destroy his family as well, he wanted to die. He knows that he has "cut himself off" from his family because of his deed, but that he could no longer live without them. Esther and Tom then sit down on their son's bedside and Tom also takes his hand lovingly.

The film was shot from February 1st to March 4th 2011 in Berlin and the Uckermark . It premiered on June 30, 2011 at the Munich Film Festival . The German first broadcast took place on February 10, 2012 on ZDFneo . Three days later the film was shown on ZDF , where it was seen by 5.17 million viewers, which corresponded to a market share of 15 percent.

The film received a nomination at the Festival de Télévision de Monte-Carlo , and Niki Stein was nominated for best director and Heino Ferch for best leading actor.
