history

The communal cultural history collection has existed in its current form since 1994, but goes back to a Wendish farmhouse parlor set up in the Cottbus local history museum in 1908, which existed until the Nazi era . The exhibits there were lost after the Second World War .

In 1980, in the GDR , a museum for Lower Sorbian literature was set up in Branitz Castle, initially as a permanent exhibition and then as a traveling exhibition . A short time later this collection was put into storage .

After 1985, a new permanent exhibition was designed from the basic inventory in the magazine. The aim was to create a Sorbian museum exhibition in which not only literature but also music, folklore and the visual arts were to be shown. A newspaper and book collection was to research available for the general public to this the Sorbian traditions to bring closer.

Various efforts in the 1980s and after reunification finally led to the opening of today's museum on June 3, 1994.

In addition to the permanent exhibition, over 40 special exhibitions on various topics have been shown in the 15 exhibition rooms of the local history museum. All exhibitions are bilingual, German-Sorbian ( Wendish ).

The museum houses the largest collection of Lower Sorbian costumes , also known as Spreewald costume .
