The mayor has expressed distrust in them and fears theft, they are only allowed to rest outside the village. The village policeman is supposed to keep an eye on her as long as she has to be tolerated, but in no time he is absorbed by the charm of the gypsies. The mayor's son Hans, a blacksmith, offers to help repair the car.
The young men of the village prefers the evening campfire gypsy where Saffy them with a Czardas infatuated. Hans and his brother Michl, a hunter, are impressed by the unusually erotic feminine dance style. Saffy wants to make the mayor's sons fall in love with each other and turn them against each other in order to get revenge for the treatment of their people by their father. Hans and Michl vie for Saffy and become competitors. The repair of the car takes Hans as long as possible, to the sorrow of Annerl, who is in love with him. When Hansen's Marientaler is missing, suspicion immediately falls on the gypsies.
By mayoral decree, the gypsies are asked to leave the area within twenty-four hours. After a theft from the Mosner landlady, Saffy is accused by the villagers, but Hans defends her and gives her an alibi. He moves away with the gypsies, but soon realizes that Saffy's only interest is in the gypsy Pietro.
After more than a year, the man from Melch now regrets his son's expulsion. While a festival is being held, Hans returns to his home village as a vagabond. Annerl discovers her lover in the forge and they get together.
