Werner Alpers (born August 26, 1936 in Harburg-Wilhelmsburg ) is a German marine researcher. He is a professor emeritus at the Institute for Oceanography at the University of Hamburg .

Life

Alpers studied physics at the University of Hamburg , the University of Zurich and the University of Wisconsin – Madison . In 1967 he received his doctorate from the University of Hamburg in the field of theoretical physics (elementary particle theory). From 1968 to 1970 he was a postdoctoral fellow at the European Space Research Institute (ESRIN) in Frascati near Rome and from 1970 to 1973 scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Physics and Astrophysics , Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching near Munich , where he worked in the field of Space physics and cosmic ray physics worked. In 1973 he switched to oceanography and has since worked in the field of remote sensing of the ocean. First he worked as a scientist at the University of Hamburg and the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology , from 1985 to 1989 as a professor at the University of Bremen in the Department of Physics and Electrical Engineering and from 1989 to 2001 as a professor at the University of Hamburg in the Institute for Oceanography. There he founded and led the research group Satellite Oceanography , in which basic research was carried out in preparation for satellite missions for remote sensing of oceans. In 2001 he retired. Since his retirement in 2001 he has continued to work in research at the University of Hamburg and works closely with scientists from France, Norway, USA, Russia and China. Since 1999 he has been visiting professor at the Ocean University of China in Qingdao .

He is married to Ruth Alpers, b. Small service. You have five children.
