Werner Basel (born October 23, 1937 ) was a soccer player and soccer coach in the GDR soccer game . For the SC Chemie Halle he played in the GDR Oberliga , the top division of the East German Football Association .

Athletic career

As a junior player, Basel played three international matches with the GDR junior national team in 1955 and 1956 . In all three matches he came on as a substitute for the team. In the years 1957 and 1958 Basel played for the police sports club Dynamo Hohenschönhausen in the third class II. GDR league . For the 1959 season he was delegated to the top club of the Dynamo Police Sports Association , the SC Dynamo Berlin , but played there only in the reserve team. For the 1960 season, Basel moved to the upper league promoted SC Chemie Halle and played there 20 of the 26 upper league point games. He was mainly used as a right half-forward. After only one year, Basel left Halle and returned to SG Dynamo Hohenschönhausen, which was now playing in the second-rate first GDR league . Basel only had one season again, but due to the adjustment to the summer-spring rhythm, it ran over 39 point games. In the summer of 1962 he joined the TSC Oberschöneweide , which had been promoted to the first GDR league. In February 1963 he was one of the players who were taken over by the merged TSC Berlin . Three years later he joined the TSC soccer section for the outsourced 1. FC Union Berlin . As a 29-year-old regular player, he was involved in promotion to the league in 1966. He then ended his career as a football player.

Coaching career

As an active footballer, Basel was active as a youth coach at TSC and 1. FC Union. From 1966 he was first coach of the 1st and 2nd youth teams and later junior coach at Union. In 1970 he was taken over by the GDR Football Association , where he also worked as a youth coach. Among other things, he was temporarily the assistant coach of the GDR youth national team and chief coach of the junior team. For example, in August 1978 he coached the GDR U18s at the 12th edition of the friendship youth competitions in the Gera district . The team with the current and later league players Andreas Zachhuber , Harald Gramenz , Uwe Zötzsche and Frank Windelband finished in 2nd place after the 0-1 defeat in the final against the USSR juniors in the Geraer Stadium of Friendship .
